Q&A with Chef Richard on His Whole30 Experience

THE INTERVIEW.
Q&A WITH CHEF RICHARD ON HIS WHOLE30 EXPERIENCE.

We recently interviewed Chef Richard Bradford, Founder/Managing Partner of Pre-Made Paleo and Author of  the recipes in the latest Whole30 book, about the Whole30 diet he is doing right now. Here are a few highlights!

IF YOU HAD TO PICK A FAVORITE WHOLE30 MEAL THAT YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I think the dish I couldn't go without would be the No Fuss Crab Cakes.  It was an adaptation from the No Fuss Salmon Cakes by Melissa Joulwan in the Whole30 Book.  They were excellent as an entree with a salad or soup or both. Then they were a great leftover for lunch. They even traveled well! I took a few for our meal on the plane to NYC and had my last one for breakfast!

WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE ON THE WHOLE30 AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?
I think my biggest challenge during the Whole30 was eating enough when I didn't meal plan. Coming off our holiday weekend when we had to plan every meal in order to survive without a home cooked meal, we winged it a couple days. I had emergency food to supplement, but it was TOUGH! Overcoming it was a scramble until I sat down and made a meal plan. Then all was right in the world.

HOW DO YOU STICK TO YOUR WHOLE30 WHILE TRAVELING REGULARLY FOR BUSINESS?
Plan, plan, PLAN!!! Pack snacks or a meal for the flight. Chances are good that your flight plus travel to and from will straddle a meal time. I generally will use my Pre-Made Paleo meals as a staple. It's easy to add them to salad greens or other compliant ingredients. Hit a grocery store when you arrive to get some basics. I've found most hotels either have a small fridge in the room or you can request one. If not, you can let the front desk know you are on a special diet and they may have a solution for you. Also, I google Paleo or Whole30 restaurants in the area. Don't be fooled though. Read the ingredients on the menu or ask questions directly as business can tag Paleo or Whole30 when advertising.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP DOs AND DONTs WHILE DOING A WHOLE30?
My Do's
- Read the Whole30 literature. The more you know the better equipped you are for success.
- Plan your week, plan you day, plan your meals. Did I mention plan? Do it!
- Find one grocery store to do most of your shopping. Keep it simple as your time will keep on moving along.
- Take notice of how you feel. Your body will be sending all sorts of signals out. Google your issue or look at the Whole30 forums for similar issues and solutions.
- Try new recipes
- Get outside and get moving.
- Stay positive.
- Stick to the plan. It works.
My Don'ts
- Wing it.
- Know your mind is playing tricks when you are craving snacks all the time. Don't give in!
- Eat the same thing every day at each meal. (It's easy to eat eggs for breakfast every day but it gets old too.)
- Cook recipes that take all day.
- Put yourself in tempting situations.
- Pull that scale out.
